YMCA STEAM Initiative
Program Description
Through ACEF's partnership with the YMCA of Calhoun County, the YMCA STEAM Initiative provides STEAM enrichment services to students enrolled in summer camp at the local YMCA. By connecting STEAM and literacy, the program seeks to positively impact cognitive development, increase literacy and math skills, and help students reflect meaningfully on their work and that of their peers. Participants engage in hands-on STEAM activities including sports, travel, cooking, weather, and maps to build on students' STEAM knowledge. Content and related activities vary to relate to students' interests and familiarity with these topics to foster a better understanding of STEAM.
Program Objectives
Develop students' critical thinking skills by exploring and applying STEAM-based solutions to real-world problems experienced in society, locally and globally.
Encourage students to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics throughout their elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education leading to a career in a STEAM field.
Provide access to STEAM activities for students living in underserved communities.
Through partnership with Anniston Community Education Foundation, the STEAM Enrichment program will provide STEAM enrichment services to students who participate in the YMCA afterschool and summer enrichment programs.
Mission
The mission of the YMCA of Calhoun County is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
About the Y
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors in 10,000 communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Our core values unite us as a Movement. They are the shared beliefs and essential principles that guide our behavior, interactions with each other and decision-making.
